Welcome to YCC's Collective Funding Project IV
Join us and Camel Assembly in raising 3,500 GBP to support 'Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resistance' at Nottingham Contemporary and De La Warr Pavilion, UK.
Still I Rise is a timely exhibition exploring the role that women have played in the history of resistance movements and alternative forms of living. Coinciding with the centenary of women’s suffrage in the UK, this major group exhibition looks at resistance across the world from a multiplicity of viewpoints, from the domestic sphere to large-scale uprisings and spanning the late 19th century to the present. Developed as a collaboration between two institutions, Still I Rise unfolds in two ‘Acts’, responding to the local specificities of each place.
Funds raised by YCC and Camel Assembly will go towards the inclusion of works and archival material by artists from and related to South and East Asia.
All funders will be invited to a private dinner in London Wednesday Nov 14 and a private tour at Nottingham Contemporary Saturday Nov 17.
Act 1: 27 October 2018 – 27 January 2019, Nottingham Contemporary
Act 2: 9 February – 2 June 2019, De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea
'Still I Rise' is curated by Irene Aristizábal (Nottingham Contemporary), Rosie Cooper (De La Warr Pavilion), Cedric Fauq (Nottingham Contemporary)
About Nottingham Contemporary
Nottingham Contemporary brings international art to an iconic building in Nottingham City Centre. Designed by Stirling Prize-winning architects Caruso St John, it is one of the largest and most ambitious contemporary art spaces in the UK. It opened in 2009 with 1.5 million visitors to date.
About De La Warr Pavilion
De La Warr Pavilion is a centre for arts and culture in an iconic modernist building by the sea, opened to the public in 1935 as the ‘people’s pavilion for art and culture’. Attracting around 400,000 visitors a year, it presents an integrated cultural programme across two exhibition spaces and an auditorium.
About Camel Assembly
Camel Assembly is an international community of creative female leaders who gather to make change. We believe change begins with self, and spreads to families, communities, and leads to social impact. Camel Assembly’s mission is to see women #marchingdaily – showing up to dreams, passions, relationships and their health as consistently as to their workplaces and protests. This is facilitated through physical assemblies in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai and Nairobi, which act as groundswells of creativity and collaboration.
About YCC's Collective Funding Programme
From the start YCC has wanted to revisit the notion of arts patronage in and out of Asia. In response, YCC’s ‘Collective Funding’ programme was launched in August 2016 with the aim of using the 'collective power' of its 300+ active members to fund particular projects that open and expand artistic dialogue related to Asia. This project follows from YCC's focus on raising funds for projects that are socially engaged and touch upon topics ranging from anthropology to gender sexuality and mental health. YCC has successfully funded three projects at Holy Motors, Neptune and Things that can happen.
