Notes on Motherhood Photoproject Exhibition

Hi there!

My name is Alex Edwards and I'm a local freelance photographer on Hong Kong Island. I recently also became a young mum who was still trying to stay in touch with her creative side.

So I took a risk and give it my all to make this idea of mine a reality. The idea was to capture the nature of motherhood through my lens - the challenges, the nastyness, the incredible amount of love, stress, cries and laughter through photography whilst interviewing local mums about their insights and emotions.

I wanted to showcase mothers as they are - the super women that do the double shifts that are not acknowledged by a society. I wanted to capture the taboo and create new conversations within parents about their own raw experience.

Since my daughter was 6 months old, I grabbed my camera and visited local mums, one by one in different Hong Kong locations. Every single visit was completely unique, extremely organic. We danced, we laughed, we had political and philosophical debates on what does it mean to be a mum and how is the process of welcoming a new identity within us - as women.

I also tried to capture the gender biases, the pressure that society puts on us and the invisible labour of helpers at home too. After capturing the essence of mum and the baby (child) I asked the mums three questions - the most negative, positive and surprising things about motherhood. The responses were overwhelmingly different and truly inspiring!

I am currently looking into options - how can I display these photos and create more conversations within their publishing. As an expat mum I don't have any financial support nor I'm on a maternity leave. I'm looking into a sponsorship ways to print the photographs out and organise this into an exhibition (aiming for the end of November/ beginning of December).
