The Kalahari Experience is a service project initiated by Frankfurt International School (FIS). Since 1991 teams of people have been working with the Tswana people in the Moshaweng Valley in South Africa. The Kalahari Experience is currently managed by Ambrose Kelly OAM, the Director of The Kalahari Experience at FIS.
The Moshaweng Valley is an isolated area in the Kalahari Desert approximately 100 kilometres north of Kuruman. Most of the 10 villages in the Moshaweng Valley are accessible only by unpaved road. Many of the people in this area are not original residents, but were “displaced” during apartheid. They were sent to this semi-desert area that is now home to approximately 30,000 people. It is one of the poorest areas in South Africa.
While I am in the Moshaweng Valley, I will teach primary students. We will teach them basic math and English skills. I began preparing for the Kalahari experience for over a year and I am very excited to be included in the group of students chosen to participate in this experience. With your help, I will have life changing experiences and will help change the lives of the young students in the Kalahari Desert.

Hope you have an incredible time! I have been to South Africa and it is a very beautiful place. My daughter, Rebecca, and I went in 2011 and also went to Botswana, just north of S.A. We learned that Botswana was as old as I was (44 at the time) and S.A. was as old as Rebecca (15 at the time). That was since each of the countries independence from the Europeans who governed them. S.A. has come a long way in such a short time, but still has a long way to go. Bless you for doing what you can to make a difference! -Laura Speiran, one of your mom's deacon friends from Michigan
