Help Us, Help Kaylee – Cochlear Implant Fundraiser

On 12^th May 2014 gorgeous little Kaylee was born. In ±May 2015 we noticed that she still doesn’t respond to her name or any load noises whatsoever.

On 7^th July 2015 Audiologist & Speech therapist from Vereeniging, Dr. Mariekie Cilliers, conducted a full hearing test. We were referred to Dr. Elize de Koker, Krugersdorp.

ASSR & ABR tests were done by Audiologist, Amey van Schalkwyk. It was then confirmed that Kaylee was born with profound bilateral sensorineural deafness due to intra-uterine infection with measles before birth.

We were then referred to the PCIU. Further tests were done including MRI & CT scans. After being evaluated by another Speech therapist, it was good to hear that Kaylee’s development was satisfactory up to that point. Kaylee was given two hearing devices to try test whether cochlear implants would have an impact on her. It was then confirmed that she was in fact a successful candidate for cochlear implants.

After much grafting, fundraising, prayers, donations from numerous goodhearted individuals from family, friends, and complete strangers, we were fortunate enough to have Kaylee’s 1 ^st implant done a mere two days before her 2^nd birthday, 10 ^th May 2016. What an amazing gift to give a child, this truly was.

However, this was not the end of our journey to provide Kaylee with a normal life.

We immediately started raising funds for her 2 ^nd implant, as we were told the first three years of a child’s life is the most crucial for proper development. Unfortunately, its proven to be much more of a challenge gathering the necessary funds for her 2 ^nd implant, as we are still paying doctors’ bills, trips to Pretoria etc.

12th May 2017 marks Kaylee’s 3^rd birthday and we are still nowhere near where we’d like to be to help make her 2 ^nd implant possible.

With time, support & patience, we could possibly provide little Kaylee with an almost normal life, one she & all little ones, deserve.
