Campaign Story
Hi, I'm Saskia!
We all want to be the change we want to see in the world, and the story we tell ourselves is everything.
Being legally blind taught me how to solve life's trivial everyday problems by figuring it out.
Can't drive? Order an Uber. Can't do your eyeliner? Ask a bestie. Can't read? Listen to your favourite podcast or order that must-read title on Audible. College fees too expensive? Find an online course on CreativeLive.
You can figure it out - using the right words inspires change.
Yes, I'm blind. I know I look "normal" - whatever that means - but you'll soon get to know my invisible disability called Stargardt disease.
Navigating life as a disabled person in a developing country like South Africa ain't no walk in the park. Honestly, it's overwhelming.
What gives me hope about the COVID-19 situation is that it forces businesses who choose to be resilient in these uncertain times to be more open for employees to work from home.
This means SO MUCH for me as someone with a visual impairment - especially in a developing country like South Africa.
Companies here are very hesitant to hire people with disabilities because they'd have to invest in assistive aids which can be pretty pricey and travelling with these devices back and forth from home to work can be risky.
Most of these assistive devices lack functional design concepts, making these aids bulky, fragile and heavy to carry. You don't want to drop any of these magnifying screens!
So, the idea that I can work from home without having to damage any of my aids - and wearing one of my favourite pairs of yoga pants - is a dream!
As a copywriter, I want to help creative entrepreneurs connect with their dream customer using the power of words - especially in the wellness and creative industries.
You can check out my copywriting services at saskiawburman.com.
That's why I need your help to not only buy the necessary assistive aids but also help cover monthly expenses so I can cultivate an independent life filled with hope and unstoppable self-belief.
How will the funds be used?
Assistive devices like:
Apple products that already have accessibility-friendly features integrated into their software.
Monthly expenses:
Rent, utility bills and food.
Even though I have Stargardt's, I'm immensely grateful for having a healthy and moving-abled body.
Yoga, meditation, writing and travel teaches me every day how to become a better version of myself, and I'd love to share these simple practices to those around me.
Help me share life's simple joys.
With gratitude,
Saskia.
