Campaign Story
Easter Weekend turned Tragedy : Following the recent heavy rains and flooding in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, there has been so much devastation and destruction left in the storms wake. Whilst most of us still sit comfortably in our Urban homes, it's those in the rural areas who suffer the most at hands of this type of disaster. Townships often are without running water, and people queue at communal taps with buckets for access to water that is used for daily cooking, cleaning, washing etc. There is a lack of sewage systems in many rural areas, as well as limited access to electricity. Some townships consist of a mixture of houses and shack type dwellings made from metal, cardboard, old sign boards, mud and tree branches. Pretty much anything that is available to offer shelter.
My domestic helper, along with so many others have lost their homes and have little means to replenish what has been lost. Many are unemployed, whilst others earn less than $200 per month. I was hoping to be able to raise funding in order to build a home for her, and extend this to others in her area should I be able to raise enough funds. The cost of building a simple township house with two rooms and a bathroom, is estimated at $5000. I hope to be able to lessen this amount slightly. The house will not be fancy, it will not be big, but it will be a dream that many domestic workers could never afford on their salaries. I have attached a picture of what the houses will look like once built.
Please help me, help them. Thank you.
