I have a great opportunity to participate in the Young Scholars Program at the University of Maryland this summer and I need your help!
I have always loved movies (and good television shows). I have a huge interest in film, just about all aspects, especially writing, directing and producing. This summer I will be taking a course called Film Form and Culture. This course will introduce me to the fundamentals of film analysis. According to the course description, I will learn about the construction of film narrative, as well as formal elements of film, including principles of editing, mise-en-scene, cinematography, and sound. The course also provides an introduction to issues in film studies that include the meaning of film genre, the role of the film star, and the question of authorship in the cinema. The course will also focus on narrative feature films from the Classical Hollywood cinema, but it will also pay attention to nonfiction practices as well as alternatives to Hollywood. Sounds great, right? I finally get to learn about something that really matters to me!
For three weeks, I will attend class, enjoy field trips and guest speakers, study, work on projects, and prepare for exams. I will also participate in seminars, workshops, and social activities where I will meet, live, and study with other talented high school students from around the U.S. and the world while living on campus in College Park.
With my sister going to college this year, ANY help you can give will take some of the financial pressure off my parents and will be appreciated by ALL of us!
