WetRock Adventure is a heated indoor water park in the beautiful suburb of Waterfall, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Children love this piece of heaven on earth.
However, on the 13th of July 2021, WetRock was burnt down in some of the most mindless and brutal acts of looting and destruction that swept through our province.
My family have fortunately been away during the time and I've had the time to introduce this concept of "bad decision-making some people have made" which has and will have a myriad of severe consequences for families across KZN. But this is not the case for the large majority of family's back home. They had to hold their children tight while they heard sounds of gun shots and violence, battling to fall asleep, seeing the fear grip their parents regardless of how hard they worked to stand strong and console their children, saying that everything will be okay when they weren't sure what dawn would bring.
And so, when I explained to my children (7,7 and 3) that WetRock was destroyed, my seven year old sobbed. Not because her play place was gone, but because this local family had lost their business, and with all that the COVID-19 pandemic has already done for loss of income to many such businesses, how would this family and their business survive this?
After a few minutes of weeping face down in my lap, she had an idea! She wanted to give them her pocket money (which is a huge total -sarcasm - of around R60) and then work for chores at home to continue to support them. My heart burst in a million pieces.
Which leads to this campaign, guided by and to bolster my daughters empathetic and philanthropic desires to care for a family we don't know but who's loss resonates across age gaps.
If your children and their families and friends would like to contribute to this cause, please do so. Whether big or small, I'm sure every penny will help!
