wethefarm

A platform for people to share stories, knowledge and experience; a platform to recycle food waste through composting; a platform to showcase that edible gardening is attainable and transformative.

Where, Who & Why

Nestled next to Bukit Timah hill on the rooftop of Beauty World Center, wethefarm is the brainchild of 3 friends. We wanted to create a meaningful space on (often) under-utilised rooftops in hopes that the presence of a farm could rejuvenate the place, forge new inter-generational connections, spawn off new collaborations and as a community play a role in making our planet a little better for future generations to come.

wethefarm is not a registered company or organisation of any kind, we are currently running the farm as a passion project that happens only on the weekends when we are not at our full-time jobs. We are very lucky to have family, friends, colleagues and bosses who are supportive of this effort. Such encouragements drive us forward.

The primary mission of wethefarm is to work with the communities, business owners, F&B operators or supermarkets around Beauty World neighbourhood to collect their food waste and turn that into compost. The compost would in turn be used to fertilised the plants, the plants in turn produce food for us, and plant parts that we don’t need returns to be composted, thus forming a closed-loop system. We will be using a variety of composting methods, relying on nature’s creation like the Black Soldier Fly, Isopods, Earthworms, Bacteria, Fungi and other Microorganisms.

wethefarm is also envisioned as an experimental place for workshops ranging from growing edibles, cooking, to arts and craft - a space for folks to drop by and learn from one another. We want it to be a collaborative space, an alternative lifestyle venue, ground-up and organic.

To sustain our operations and make this a viable model, we hope to establish connections with local F&Bs and the community to provide freshly harvest edible plant parts such as the roots, the stems, the leaves, the flowers and the fruits. The revenues would go into keeping the farm alive (for paying rent).

How You Can Help

https://tinyurl.com/beautyworldroofgarden

Since May 2022, we started constructing the farm bit by bit, and thanks to the many volunteers who have helped along this journey, we have completed most of the construction. What is left are the fire safety provisions and lighting protection measuress - both are regulatory requirements and also for the safety of our volunteers and farm visitors.

This is where the funds would prove most helpful. We have gathered quotations for the work from multiple contractors however, the cost for the work is quite steep ($20,000). We are hoping to gather support to push the last leg of our journey. Just one more push, and wethefarm can finally be opened to the public.

we hope you can take this journey with us, your donation would help wethefarm go a long way. Thank you.

* we have attached a screenshot of one of the many quotations we are seeking from different contractors to supply and install the fire and lighting protection systems required. Refer to the photos in this page.
