Campaign Story
The global water crisis is the number one threat to our world. More than half the schools in Africa lack access to clean water sanitation and hygiene education. Students miss many days of school due to water and sanitation related illnesses. While the lack of water and toilets affects all students, the impact on girls is most significant. Girls must walk long distances to collect water for their families, which causes them to miss school. When they reach puberty, they miss school or stop attending if they do not have access to adequate latrines.
H2O for Life is providing a solution to the water crisis by creating partnerships between schools in the United States and schools in Africa to support clean water, sanitation and hygiene education projects (WASH in Schools). These projects improve the overall health of students, increase the number of years girls stay in school and make learning possible.
Since 2007, more than 500,000 young people in the U.S. and their schools have helped more than 300,000 students in Africa gain access to clean water and sanitation. Funds raised by our U.S. students have been matched by our partners on the ground in Africa—totaling $6 million in the last 10 years.
H2O for Life is helping to educate the next generation of global citizens. In the U. S. and Africa, the students we work with are becoming water stewards and learning that their actions can change the world.
