Volunteering in Sri Lanka

Hi, my name is Esha and in January, I will be travelling to Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka for a month to volunteer with the organisation Plan My Gap Year.

In the first two weeks of my trip, I will be taking part in the childcare project, where I will be volunteering in pre-schools. Here, I will be supporting struggling families and enhancing early years educational development, through creative activities that will enable the children to learn and develop their English, thus contributing towards the UN's Sustainable Development Goal NO.4 (Education).

In the other two weeks of my trip, I will be taking part in the dog rescue project, where I will be volunteering in a dog shelter. Here, my main tasks will be helping with the upkeep of the project premises, feeding and playing with the dogs as well as grooming and checking them for ticks. In Sri Lanka, there are estimated to be more than 3 million dogs, so this volunteer work should be impactful in trying to reduce this number, both by helping with many dogs found injured, disabled or abandoned on the streets, as well as providing animal welfare education to the community. As well as this, this project contributes to the UN's Sustainable Development Goal NO.15 (Life on Land).
