What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is an African Brazilian martial art that features a ritualistic fight set to music. During the fight two participants dance around each other using kicks, takedowns to "outplay" their opponent.  The object is not to win however but to increase awareness, dexterity, strength, and balance. Instruments in capoeira are primarily percussive and reflective of afro brazilian culture.

What is Vai Capoeira?

Vai Capoeira is a capoeira group started by Sean Ashanti in 2007. The first Vai was started in Wilmington, Delaware effectively making it the first Capoeira school in the states history. Vai Capoeira found a home at the former Golds Gym on the Kirkwood Highway. Most people in Delaware had no idea what capoeira was at the time. With the help of the capoeira community Sean "Muito Loco" Ashanti fought against the odds to share what is Capoeira to the first state almost 7 days a week for over 4 years.  Vai Capoeira would eventually expand to include locations in Philadelpia and even New York.

What makes Vai Capoeira special?

While capoeira is getting more popular everyday, it's still a very niche community in America. Despite this Vai Capoeira has always worked with students so they could train for little or even no money.  Muito Loco never looked as Vai Capoeira as a money making venture but as a way to share an activity he knows and loves with everyone he comes across. In love, war, and sports there always tends to be some kind of politics. One thing that stood out about Vai Capoeira is that among Capoeira schools it was very politics free. You could attend class no matter where you were from. Capoeira to us, is for everybody.

Why should we donate to Vai Capoeira?

Vai Capoeira in order to grow, needs to change, and in order to change we need to restructure.  In order to retain our creedo "Capoeira is for everyone." We need a jolt to keep the school going. After years of philanthropy without a formal non-profit classification; space rental, supplies, and even small administrative duties take their toll. In the reorganizing we'd like to find a new affordable location, get new supplies, formalize as a non profit and put more effort towards official sponsorship.  All this takes time and money.
