We are travelling to Kenya to work with street children in orphanges and schools in Kisumu, West Kenya. The money we raise will help to fund our trip and additional money will help to support and develop the rehibilitation centres we visit.

The first place we will stay is a large developed complex containing nursery, primary and secondary schools and providing free education, health care and a home to many orphan and street children. Some children are found on the street and given a home and others (because the orphanage is well known) are dumped on the doorstep as a very young child or baby. For example some children with disabilities or born twins are considered possessed and threat to the community. Girls are usually kept close to the family as when they reach the age of 13 they are often sold for prostitution.

The second place they will be working with the Isaiah Trust Charity (http://www.isaiahtrust.org) who run an orphanage for mainly street boys and several girls with disabilities. They also have a church and rehabilitation centre. It is a lot more basic having a drop down toilet and frequent power cuts. The children go away for their education during the day which has to be paid for. The charity is completely donation funded and has no government support.

We have done lots of fundraising before for a variety of charities including Rainbow House, Sports Reach, Comic Relief, Children in Need, Make a Wish Foundation and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. We have raised over £10,000 through dance shows and a variety of sponsored events and would really like to see the difference fundraising makes to peoples lives and so we started planning a trip to Kenya after hearing about the Isaiah Trust Charity from a friend. We would like to make a difference not just by giving and fundraising but by giving our time and giving support to the charities and people that benefit from the money we raise. Due to our trip being late notice we have only been able to do a few car boot sales and plan to do a craft stall when we return, to help to fund our trip. Going to a developing country has many cost implications including expensive flights as they are less frequent, immunisations and visas.
