The Virtual Traveler

Who Am I:  

My name is Nayah, I am fifteen years old, attend the Florida Virtual School and for most of my life, I have been a third culture kid. What is a third culture kid?  I can tell you that it is contagious! My parents sometimes take on overseas jobs that take me to beautiful, far off places where I have the wonderful opportunity to meet new people and share stories and experiences with them. That was the glamorous, glitzy side. On the other hand, being away takes me away from my friends, Justin Bieber concerts in Madison Square Garden and more importantly, particular events that are really important to me at this point in my life. Namely, seeing my best friend Priscilla take off her braces after wearing them for 5 years and more notably, attend my school open house/ say (whatever) taking place in my home state of Florida.   

Being Involved:

Even from far away, I am always encouraged to take part in various groups and organizations in my home state as well as bigger USA. I am currently in the Student Ambassador club, Newspaper Club, Inter-Club Council and the Student Tutoring Club as well as being a straight A's Honors Student. In addition, I have been instrumental in many programs that I have been involved in, namely; World-Fest, the Literacy festival, FLVS's Open-House and the Shakespeare Festival. As a generation On Youth Advisory Member, I have completed many projects like 2011's  9/11 Online Seminar and i am currently working on an upcoming  FLVS and generationOn sponsored Anti-Bullying Conference. 

My delimma: 

Last year, in signing on for the Youth Advisory Council 2012-2014 team with generationOn.  It was necessary for me to attend a 5-day conference in New York and learn more about leadership and other skills necessary in carrying out my duties as a Youth Advisor Council member. My parents, seeing how excited I was about the project as well as being selected in the first place, out of 6trillion other participants, decided to use spring for it; I’m happy they did. I learnt a lot and the conference was well attended. While I can always ask my parents to help with my sometimes overzealous ambitions (all academic of course-lol) it’s not all the times that they can assist. In attending that conference, I used up my one trip home for this year.

How You Can Help: 

Throughout my amazing years at FLVS, I have made so many friends my age who are as interested in school and learning as I am. Every year, my school has one day for all the clubs to meet up and all the students to come together in Florida to actually meet each other in real life! I am very involved in my school and have always dreamed of going to this event to see what it is like but because I will be overseas for this event, it is almost impossible for my parents to finance the trip after going to a conference some months ago. If you are as excited about learning as I am and can afford to assist, please donate to help make my dream of attending Club Day a reality.
