Kathy Welter-Nichols on Voice America

The recent death of a young professional in September 2016, with bulimia really shook me to the core. It emphasized the need for greater awareness, as none of her family knew she struggled with bulimia from the age of 14.

At 37 her life ended when her heart stopped as the potassium levels in her body dipped below what her heart could manage. In her profession she could not be discovered. This had to be kept secret.

I continued to stay in touch with her through August, and she and I spoke about her going home to visit the family, and then when she got back, she would come to see me.

The first week of September a call came from her sister to let me know she had died at home.

Living alone, she was due for work, and her colleagues sent someone around when she was late. They found her dead, her potassium levels were so low, that together with a small amount of alcohol & drugs in her blood stream, she died.

The grief and sadness of friends and family were so intense. Here this talented, skilled, extremely intelligent young woman, was gone.

..she said to me, 'no one knows', and I have to keep it this way'...

So I want to dedicate an entire show to people that have lost someone to this disorder and let their voices be heard. It's devastating for families, both living with the behaviours and then losing their beloved daughters and sons to the disordered behaviour they were powerless to shift.

This silent internal agreements that go with managing this, is to fight those inner demons, the voices in the head that seem to start it all, and yet blame goes everywhere, while the disorder maintains control.

Generally parents can tell when their kids are "off" and know something is up. As our kids age however, we step back and often hope for the best.

Thank you for supporting my show, and helping dissolve many of the myths about disordered eating.

We had been searching for someone with expert skills in working with disordered eating, someone passionate about their work with disordered eating – Finding Kathy Welter-Nichols hit all the bells for us. She’s an author, had done talk shows in the past, and even had some TV appearances. In our early conversations, Kathy shared some incredible information, that we know is going to be of interest to our listeners. Her program goes beyond these behaviours, It takes us into relationships with ourselves and food, our addiction to thinness, emotional eating, binge eating and how all of this affects our emotional intelligence. She is an expert in her field and we are super excited to have her with us”. VoiceAmerica Team!
