SINGAPOREAN SARAH PANG BREAKS WTA RANKINGS
Dreams Come True with the Singapore Spirit
A journey of a thousand miles, starts with a dream and a single step. For Singaporean tennis player Sarah Pang, it is one that has been walked in the shoes of Singaporeans from all walks of life.
In a rankings announcement made on 5 August 2019 by the International Tennis Federation, Sarah debuts for Singapore on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles’ rankings at WTA1232. The 34-year-old joins an exclusive group of only 15% of competitive players around the world who hold a coveted WTA/ATP professional ranking; with only 1% of new players per annum successfully breaking into the WTA rankings. Sarah is the 5th player in our current era and the 8th Singaporean in our nation’s history, to make the WTA singles’ rankings. She is also one point away from breaking into the WTA doubles’ rankings.

In an industry where the majority of professional players are funded by their families, state or private sponsors, Sarah’s journey towards breaking into the WTA rankings was an endeavour fully funded by everyday Singaporeans. She created an online platform called TenniswithSarah, where she shared live stories of her touring experience in ways that made the journey relatable to Singaporeans from all walks of life. Through this, Sarah found support that allowed her to source for and convince some of the best coaches and specialists to help her move forward in her game.
Sarah picked up tennis at 19 with the vision of one day playing the WTA Tour – a dream that was dismissed as delusional by many. Undeterred, Sarah self-funded her own pipeline for 10 years, working multiple jobs to fund her own training, including stints in Spain where she bartered 12-15 hour work-shifts for training in kind. Fuelled by a deep desire to engage her community in the greater pursuit of excellence, Sarah decided to turn full-time in 2015 and was the first Singaporean athlete to crowdfund in order to train and compete internationally.
“I have always had a deep belief in the player I could become. The biggest challenge was not training hard or the grind on Tour; but finding enough support to make it happen. To have broken into the rankings was no easy feat, but it is made very special because I was truly an athlete who was supported and sustained by the people,” shares Sarah Pang about her achievement.
From a security guard uncle who slipped S$10 into her hand, to the corporate lawyer who donated S$100 to keep her on Tour, to a Singaporean company that seeded S$10,000 into her journey, each person told Sarah that she carried their own dreams and aspirations whenever she steps out on court to fight for herself and her flag. To finally break onto the WTA board, particularly during Singapore's National Day week, is especially meaningful for Sarah as this milestone ranking was a product of the people – and she has made it because of them.
Majulah Singapura!

Your grit, fight & journey in the game has been an absolute inspiration to my kids & I. A shining beacon of light and ray of hope for those who have not had as many privileges, and had a later entry into the game, like my son. Thank you for all that you do, & for all that you fight for. Please continue to inspire all of us!
