Who You Will Be Supporting

Hello! My name is Julie. I am an educator who is searching to becoming a great one.

Although I am not a "certified" educator, I call myself an educator because I have been involved in educational efforts for most of my life. As a middle school student, I was always eager to help my classmates with schoolwork. Since high school, I have been a volunteer tutor at a local library (four years), a tennis camp instructor, a mentor in a city program, and a group leader at a summer camp in my hometown of Everett (three years). My current educational projects are pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Math Education and teaching certification and volunteering as head math coach for a program called Let's Get Ready (LGR). LGR is a great program that works towards preparing students from low-income families for college. As you can see, education has consumed my life in a positive way and I do not plan to change that.

What You Will Be Supporting

This fall semester, I will be involved in a new educational experience that I hope you will help support. I will be completing my student teaching at a school in Sydney, Australia. For four months, I will be practicing to become a classroom teacher in a foreign country that has interesting perspectives of what education is.

In addition to supporting my teaching preparation, you will be supporting my growth as a global citizen. Despite having fears of leaving home and encountering a new culture, I made the decision to travel to Australia because I have realized how crucial it is that we learn to interact with people who are different from us and how important it is to work effortlessly to understand a person's or group's rationale for holding ideas or beliefs that conflict with our own. What other better way to do this than to live in a foreign country for four months?

I am asking you to support me in achieving these goals by donating any amount of money that you feel is appropriate. My goal is to raise $4500 which will cover my boarding expenses (food and other living expenses). Essentially, the money you contribute will be spent towards items that will keep me active and well. I am currently holding a full-time summer job and have taken out all the loans I can possibly have, but it is unfortunately not enough. That is why I have turned to you. No amount is too little!!

Why You Should Support This Cause

1) Support education by supporting budding, prospective educators

Many of you perhaps support education through taxes and being very active in your children's or nieces' and nephews' education. These are excellent ways to support education. An additional way that you can support education is to support prospective educators. This method is particularly powerful because by showing young teachers your support directly, whether it is thorough financial gifts or verbal encouragement, their motivation to educate children to the best of their abilities will be fortified. Moreover, your support will drive them to continue transforming education in the U.S. for the better. I am only one of many young teachers struggling to finance opportunities that will help us become better educators and leaders. We'd appreciate your support!!

2) Help transform education in the U.S.

Through my studies and daily experiences, I am constantly reminded that education in America is constantly changing. No matter what point in American history you pinpoint, some sort of educational reform is occurring. I find this exciting. I want to be a part of this huge experiment called education. In Australia, I intend to gather ideas that are powerful and effective in their education system and see if they would work well in the U.S.

3) Support building a strong foundation for future generations

Of the many things that I am proud of, I am proud of the fact that I am a first generation child. Accompanying this position is the responsibility to build a strong foundation for future generations, to provide first-hand stories of what an individual is capable of achieving through hard work. I want my nieces, nephews, children, and grandchildren to realize that they too can go to college and travel the world. Above all, I want them to realize that stepping out of their comfort zones and taking reasoned risks are encouraged.
