Campaign Story
I come from a small town called Qwa qwa in the Eastern part of the Free State Province, Situated in the Maluti a Phofung Municipality, the idea of Compu Wizkid was born here, this initiative was started in 2017 with the aim of teaching children from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds as early as 6 years old how to use a computer, we not only teach them how to use it but we also teach them how to assemble computers aswell, we host extra classes everyday after they come from school, we help them with their homework and then start our computer lessons.
A lot of the people in our area are unemployed and the ones who are employed do not make enough money to buy their children laptops or computers. A lot of the computers that we use we received through donations from different people, some were even scraps that we brought back to life. Compu-Wizkid itself as an Organisation is self funded and also survives on small contributions from the people around our area, but that is normally enough to cover paper, printing of learning materials, transport for the volunteers that help me teach the children and electricity costs, we help the children for free because most of their parents simply cannot afford to pay us a monthly contribution.
We have in total 33 Students that we teach each day after school, all ranging from 6 to 14 years old and our project operates from the garage at my parents house from 1pm to 6pm during the week.
We would like to get more space, because we are getting more parents asking us to take in their children, we need a container, a few more computers, a printing machine, a few toners and materials to convert the container into another class so we that we can take in more children.
The Compu-Wizkid initiative is mainly meant to transform the life of an ordinary child and to also get them off the streets after school. The Covid 19 pandemic has halted all plans for me to expand the initiative since i mostly ran it from my own pockets, i no longer have the funds to expand and keep it going on my own as i have had to use my savings to take care of my family during the lockdown.
Please help us raise money so we can continue to operate and to continue helping these children, they are afterall the future.
