Surgery for Laz

Lazarus (Laz) is a 7 year old rescue stallion saved from the kill pen at the Enumclaw Sales Pavillion. He has suffered neglect and due to frostbite, lost the tips of his ears. He came to Diamond J Training on January 14, 2013. He was clearly in pain, with a very swollen head and face. The vet came out and found a terrible sinus infection, as well as major trauma to his head and neck, which was treated and Laz is feeling much better. He is learning to love and trust despite clear abuse in the past.   Unfortunately this sweet boy is a cryptorchid. 

Cryptorchidism means "hidden testes" (crypt = hidden, orchid = testes), and is used to describe the condition in which one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) testicles do not descend normally.  Common terms for animals with this condition include rig, ridgling, original, or high flanker.  In a cryptorchid horse, one or both testicles, which form in the body, do not migrate into the scrotum.  It may be retained anywhere from the abdomen to the inguinal canal, the normal passage route into the scrotum.  As you can imagine this can cause many complications. To get him gelded will require a serious surgery, costing approximately $1,500.
