Jailed nuns. Onion farmers shot dead in the middle of the street. Teachers and healthcare workers gunned down by the military. A pact between two violent political dynasties. What are the real “issues” of the people? Guns! Goons! Gold!
The lead-up to the May 2022 national general elections in the Philippines has already been stained with blood. Warring factions of the ruling elite are struggling for power. They aren’t afraid to bribe, cheat, lie, intimidate, kidnap, and kill.
We know the world isn’t talking about this. We want to fix that.
We, the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) - Toronto chapter, will be sending two delegates as participants in an International Observers Mission (IOM). They’ll meet with local activists and officials, investigate elections-related human rights abuses, and contribute to a series of central reports. When they come back, they will present their findings far and wide. The world needs to know.
Our independent observers aren’t funded by the UN. Their airfare will be paid out of pocket. They are taking time off of work and time away from their loved ones, because they know that this is important work. In a real sense, we can’t do this without your support.
ICHRP has led IOMs for previous elections in partnership with our Philippines-based partners before, notably elections watchdog group Kontra Daya (Against Corruption). Through our partners on the ground, observers will be exposed to the injustices faced by the vast majority of Filipinos.
In a country often touted as Asia’s “first democracy”, how much power do the people really have? With your help, we want to find out.
