The idea for Ama khanjane was born on an ordinary day at college with a couple of friends playing a game of Crazy 8’s, where I got the biggest thrashing from my best friend which left me quite a sour loser. Usually I'm not one to brood over a game of cards but man that loss was BRUTAL!!!
So as I sat on the bench just shuffling my cards to keep my hands busy, the site of them began to grate at me especially the image cards. I asked myself at that point who these Kings, Queens and Jacks were. They did not relate to me in any way and spoke nothing but a sequence of numbers on card used for our entertainment. At that point I just wanted to make my idea tangible and went straight to the drawing board which led to many weeks of reference, language and culture research.
Not only was this difficult but triggered what AMA KHANJANE strongly stands by to preserve as much of the culture, history and traditions of my countries heritage and make it easily accessible for all. And thus the journey began and was joined my business and life partner who helped evolve and grow the vision into something that can ensure that our nation lives on for generations to come.
AMA KHANJANE Aims to teach, provoke, engage & challenge people indigenous or not. To share, learn and preserve the knowledge of its diverse people, while having fun. With so many cultures to experience in our land, we still have a lot of youth that lack cultural know how. Many youth today lack the knowledge of speaking their mother tongue. This decline can be easily noticed as generations go by.
AK wants to start to change that, we want to make sure that our future generations have the opportunity to experience the magnitude of culture, history and tradition that is slowly fading. The influx of western influences has left many youth ignorant and illiterate to their cultural identities. If this continues there will be nothing left of our cultures within the next 60 years except for the tribal labels left behind.
AK is not just about culture, pretty pictures and an awesome pack of playing cards. Its about LEGACY.
Its way for South Africans & the world to learn about our diverse cultures in our Beautiful land. AK lets you learn about the people you interact with in your everyday life or intend to interact with. Or maybe you would like to learn some new words from a new language. Every card in our deck takes on the form of piece of one of our precious cultures and teaches you the word of what you are looking at.
The realisation of our cultural dilution sent us on a search to libraries, to websites and then google and found that there was a very limited amount of resources that were available. This was a bit scary to realise that we as a 14 culture strong nation are hardly google able. Most of our cultural documentation online limited to a majority of local tourism sites. Even more terrible was the limitations on the search for reference images.
