MARATHON FOR PEACE
A “Statue to Statue Peace Marathon” is brought to you by Altus Sport (NPO), benefitting the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Gert Potgieter, Director of Altus Sport and founder of the marathon, said the statues are those of Nelson Mandela, situated at the Union Buildings and Hammanskraal in Pretoria. They are 42km apart, which is ideal for a marathon.
When NelsonMandela came out of prison after 27 years, he said we should now move forward in peace. There was no hatred, racism, revenge, or violence in Mandela’s mind.On the contrary, he envisaged a rainbow nation with the symbolic pot of gold filled with respect, friendship, non-violence, caring, fair play and love.Today, unfortunately, according to Gert, the ’pot of gold’ is filled with hatred, racism, corruption, greed, violence and killing.“The marathon will contribute towards the fight for peace and restoring the values of Nelson Mandela. It will also be a highlight celebrating Mandela’s 100th birthday. He was known as a world peace maker and was one of the first state presidents, accompanied by Adv George Bizos, to sign the Olympic Truce on peace in Athens 2002”.
The marathon will be run on 23 September 2018 from Hammanskraal to the Union Buildings, organized by TuksAthletics, which is also part of celebrating their 100th anniversary. “I am sure the marathon will attract thousands of runners, locally and abroad, as many runners would love to be associated with the legacy of Nelson Mandela.Sponsors would have the opportunity to support the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Altus Sport’s youth development programmes in disadvantaged communities.
