Hi all! So I’ve decided to volunteer in Sri Lanka for a month over August at a dog sanctuary there. This is an incredible opportunity and I can’t wait to go, experience a new culture and environment and look after the 1500 dogs living at the sanctuary. There is a real issue regarding strays in Sri Lanka, with the estimated number of street animals being 3 million. The sanctuary I’m volunteering at takes in strays and supplies them with food, medicines, therapies and lots of love and affection. Over the course of my time there I will be helping to feed them, exercise them, keep their home clean and give them the attention they deserve. The company I have gone through is the Mighty Roar which offers a range of volunteering opportunities over a number of different countries. I chose the Sri Lankan dog sanctuary because I thought it was the perfect match being a huge dog lover (plus they have 100 cats there too so it’s the best of both worlds). I’ll be working 5 days a week, living at the Mighty Roar accommodation with other volunteers (many of whom are doing other projects in the area) and being transported each day to and from the sanctuary. Included in the Mighty Roar fee is the accommodation and meals. When I’m not volunteering, I will have opportunities to explore the country. There are a few towns nearby and the accommodation itself happens to be a 20 second walk to the beach, as well as being next to the jungle. I am beyond excited to travel here and learn more about the Buddhist culture (which I studied at Alevel). With this incredible experience, of course, comes the expenses. The Mighty Roar makes it as cheap as possible for me to volunteer with them but obviously when you add up flights, insurance, visa etc. it becomes a bit of a sum. That’s why I’m kindly asking for any money that you can donate to help me on this adventure. I will be doing a sponsored walk up Snowdon and some other bits so if you have anything to spare, even if it’s just a pound, I would greatly appreciate it. I’ll be arriving back home a couple days before my 21st so if you were planning on getting me anything, maybe it could be towards this. Thank you.
