Campaign Story
Hi there! I am Maria a below the knee amputee. I take part in athletics, nope not running - throwing. I compete in discus and shot put. I am working hard on my dream of attending World Champs in London next year in June, however for this I need a foot with more bounce to keep up with me.
In May 2011 I slipped and fell from a height, I crushed the bridge of my right foot. During the following 3 years surgeons did their best to save the foot; however nothing worked. I opted for amputation rather than being held back by constant pain. For me, the quality of life with a prosthesis seemed like a better option than not being able to do what I love - sport, hiking and kayaking. My right foot was amputated in July 2014 below the knee. The choice of amputation height was to accommodate prosthetic feet.
I started to compete in athletics again in January 2016. I focus on shot put and discus, which can be somewhat challenging as I am right handed and it is my right foot (working leg in throwing) that has been amputated. Every day I am improving my technique and my perseverance is paying off as I have much greater range of motion and faster hips (also very important for throwing).
Currently I am throwing "A Qualifying" distances, so I qualify for the Rio Paralympics in September 2016!
Any donation towards a new sport leg would appreciated :)
