Sienna Scholars to WSC

Update posted by sienna On Jun 22, 2014

Brady and Colby will be performing a version of Miles and Miles of Texas at the Talent Showcase on Thursday at the Star Theater in Singapore.  Representatives from most of the 30 nations participating in the World Scholar's Cup will be in the talent show, and we heard last night from WSC officials that Brady and Colby were picked to represent the United States!

I heard today from the WSC administrators that they were assembling team scores from all their regional events and our senior team of Joseph Anderson, Katie Goss, and Alexander Shein, who had won the team debate and overall team competition in Houston in May, had the fourth-highest team debate score of any squad in the world!  That was fourth out of more than 3,000 teams that competed in all the various regions.  Amazing results guys!

Our students are super-excited about their upcoming adventure which is now just hours away from beginining.  Thanks to everyone who has contributed to make this trip and competition a reality.  Too many names and companies to list here (some sent checks, some are contributing later), but our community has responded despite the last-minute preparations this competition entailed.  It's not too late to lend your help!  We still are short of necessary funds - can you still help in whatever way possible?  Thanks again.

Heard from the U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Singapore, the Honorable Blair Hall, and we're hoping to arrange for a tour of the U.S. Embassy for our team as well as a face-to-face meeting next week.  The first American representative in Singapore was married to the daughter of Paul Revere, by the way!

This is the main venue in Singapore competition will be held at.   http://www.thestar.sg/  Looks like the last "performer" at the venue before the academic competition is Kyary Kyary Pamyu Pamyu in her Nanda Collection World Tour 2014 (I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone here that she is one of Japan's rising pop stars and musical talents!  You can visit her tour site at http://www.japanmusicfestival.asia/kpp)  Here's a YouTube video showing the venue.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nFzHxFZ5Pg  Maybe the twins should sign up for the talent show.

The third day will usher a return to the Star Theatre with a multicultural talent show, a showcase debate, and the program’s signature Scholar’s Bowl—a high-stakes race to solve creative academic challenges before a live audience—all followed by arguably the week’s most anticipated event: the Scholar’s Ball, a prom-like gala dance at the award-winning nightclub Zouk.

Countries represented at the Global Round will include Australia, Brunei, Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE, the UK, Uganda, the USA, and Vietnam.

The ceremonies will also feature cultural performances by the Vocal Associates Children's Choir of Singapore and appearances by consular representatives of many of the countries in attendance.

After the opening ceremony, teams will depart for a community-building scavenger hunt on Sentosa Island: a chance for them not just to get to know Singapore but also how much they have in common with their counterparts from around the globe.

The second day of the Global Round will test the scholars’ strengths in debate, writing, and problem-solving at National Junior College, Singapore Chinese Girls School, and Hwa Chong Institution.

This just in from Singapore -

Even as the world’s top football teams gather on the other side of the globe for the World Cup, more than 2,200 leading students from 30 countries will take the stage in Singapore for the 2014 World Scholar’s Cup. These students were the top scorers among more than 10,000 who competed for berths in Singapore at regional qualifying events on five continents.

The event’s opening ceremonies will take place on June 24 at the Star Theatre in Buona Vista and will feature a keynote speech by Yale-NUS College Professor of Political Science Dr. Rahul Sagar, author of Secrets and Leaks: The Dilemma of State Secrecy (Princeton University Press, 2013).

Just to give you a sense of the global set-up of this meet, since one of our teams lost its third teammate who can no longer go to Singapore, we are hoping to put together a new team of the two remaining Sienna-area students (8th graders-to-be at Quail Valley/G-T Academy) with another 13-year-old from Dubai who is originally from Pakistan by way of Australia.  So we'd have a team of three 13-year-old boys who probably share a love of Harry Potter and Disney with roots in Texas, Dubai, Australia and Pakistan!  These three would work together in a series of three-person debates along with collaborative writing and the scholar's bowl where they all answer questions together.  One can only imagine the memories that this kind of competitive partnership would generate for the youths involved.  We still need community support - please help with a small donation!
