For my family, having sheep isn't just a livelihood; it's a lifeline. In a country where Afghan women are denied official documents, and job opportunities are restricted, these gentle creatures have been our source of survival, providing us with food, wool, and the means to trade. Our family, consisting of my mother, sister, niece, and nephew, depend on these animals for survival. Their lack of official documentation restricts them from other forms of employment, making the loss of our sheep even more devastating.

Living in the countryside of Afghanistan, where illiteracy is prevalent, the bond between families and domestic animals runs deep. Our sheep not only provided us with resources but also a sense of stability and connection to our land and heritage. My mother had invested in animal food for the upcoming winter and had plans to sell some sheep to reduce our mounting debts. But the burglary has left my mother with nothing, wiping away her hopes for a better future. As an Afghan woman refugee who recently arrived in Canada, I am not yet able to help her. I am fighting to find opportunities so that I can help my mother and family in the future, but this will take time. Meanwhile, with the loss of her sheep, she has no way to survive.
