Selalihini – Let Them Fly

‘Selalihini’ is a project implemented by the Rotaract Club of Centennial United and it commenced from September 2019. The project is 2 year planned initiative to support the ‘Agamathi Vidyalaya, Colombo 15’ and the community surrounding the area with the support of the local police and other community groups. The Bloemandhal community is significantly identified as a community challenged by poverty, sickness, lack of access for primary services and also importantly on high use of illicit drugs within the community.

Rotaract Club of Centennial United joined hands with the school and the Bloemendhal Police Station in order to support the younger generation to grow as an empowered community with better opportunities for growth. To date, ‘Selalihini’ has been able to support the school with infrastructure renovation, education and grooming programmes including seminars for students facing G.C.E Ordinary Level examination in 2019 and the ‘Future Leaders Training Programme’ for prefects of the school. The project is also supporting the school to organize its first ever prize giving in the history of 40 years.

The projects next key initiatives are

• Practical English Learning Program
• Student development through Sports
• Construction of an Science lab
• Refurbishment of the library
• Facilitating an IT lab

‘Selalihini’ is intended to develop students with holistic and open view with all-round skills. The Student development through sports is an important initiative that the project believes will support the younger generation to engage more with their schools and education, and at the same time develop skills such as team spirit and social cohesion. In a community with mixed ethnic and religious communities it is important to bring the community together and drive the message of peace and harmony.
