Campaign Story
Greetings! I'm Mija, an avid animal lover who's been volunteering in the world of animal rescue for about a year now, right here in Albania. Despite my previous experiences in the USA, nothing quite prepared me for the unique challenges and heart-wrenching situations I encountered in this part of the world.
Unlike the well-established animal rescue infrastructure in the USA, Albania faces significant hurdles. There's a shortage of veterinarians, essential equipment, funds, and a general lack of awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering. The distressing reality is that in every corner, there's a dog facing unimaginable suffering – whether it's from poisonings, accidents, abuse, or sheer starvation.
While there are a few dedicated volunteers, the battle seems insurmountable due to the scarcity of resources and a small, less connected community compared to what I was accustomed to back in the USA.
Initially, I tried to address individual cases, but the magnitude of the problem became apparent. Witnessing malnourished mothers trying to feed their pups or protect them with broken bones was a wake-up call. It was clear that to make a meaningful impact, I needed to tackle the root of the problem – the lack of spaying and neutering
In collaboration with compassionate veterinarians and the support of generous donors, we organized our first spay campaign. The focus was on preventing further suffering on the streets by spaying 32 females. It was a significant step, but the call for help didn't stop there.
Volunteers from various towns reached out, desperate for assistance in their communities. It became evident that to break the cycle of suffering, we needed to prevent it from happening in the first place. And so, my mission evolved: conducting spaying campaigns in towns without veterinary clinics, where the suffering of dogs is most pronounced.
For the upcoming campaign in Përrenjas, a town marked by some of the most severe cases of animal abuse I've witnessed, the goal is clear – to prevent the birth of puppies destined for a life of hardship and suffering. With the collective support of fellow animal lovers, we aim to turn this vision into a reality, making a significant impact on the lives of these animals in need.
