Save Umsizi’s Monkeys

Please help save our rescue centre.

Umsizi Umkomaas Vervet Rescue Centre is a registered NPO that was established by Tracy Rowles approximately 17 years ago. It is a wildlife rescue centre specialising in Vervet monkeys, but we also respond to calls for all other wildlife. We operate in the East Coast of South Africa 365 days a year, 24/7. Umsizi responds to approximately 300 rescues a year. All rescued animals receive veterinary care and once healed they are released back to their home territory. Those that cannot be released back into the wild are placed in our sanctuary.

Umsizi provides an essential service to both vervet monkeys and humans alike, who often occupy the same urban area. Due to the increase of building developments in the vervet monkeys natural habitat, the services of Umsizi are increasing in demand daily and they rely solely on donations by members of the public.

Umsizi is currently run from Tracy Rowles house. Due to a municipal by-law, which does not allow animal rescues to be operated in an urban area, Umsizi was given 21 days to relocate to agricultural land or rehome the monkeys in her care. Unfortunately the funds were not available to buy land that we could move the sanctuary to. There was also no other rescue centre that was able to take the monkeys that could not be released, so we had no other choice, but to continue whilst trying to fund suitable land. When the 21 days were up, Ezemvelo raided Umsizi and killed over 50 monkeys that were all in good health in sanctuary.

We now have some beautiful land that has been given to us in perpetuity, but we also have to build a new sanctuary from scratch within 6 months to prevent the death of the over 60 monkeys that are still under our care. If you are able to donate towards the items below or part thereof it would be a huge help in saving the monkeys under Umsizi's care and all the monkeys that will need help in the future.
