Save the Children – Romania

Who we are and who are we supporting

We are a group of Romanian friends living in Singapore, who care about children, their health and education. We have embarked on a mission to gather and contribute funds towards causes that directly support children in Romania: their health, their wellbeing, their education and development. Our latest campaign is supporting Save the Children - a non-governmental, public utility, non-profit organization that actively fight for the rights and child protection in Romania since 1990, according to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The problem - Romania has the highest infant mortality rate among EU countries, with 7.4 deaths per 1.000 newborns, two times higher than the European average of 3.6‰ . Save the Children Romania equipped until now 76 maternity hospitals across the country, medical equipment worth 3 million Euro, contributing to saving more than 31.000 premature newborns. But there is need for more support!

The urgent need - The urgent need is to equip Filantropia Hospital, the biggest children hospital in Oltenia (one of Romania's poorer regions) with:

• 2 phototherapy lamps - approx. 3000 euros each
• 1 auditory screening device - approx. 10,000 euros
• 1 intensive incubator - for the treatment of extreme premature babies - 17,000 euros

What we will do - 8 of us will run in the Asics Relay run on the 4th of November to raise awareness and to raise more money towards this urgent need. Most of us are not big runners so we don't think we will be fast, but we will be finishing:-)!

We hope you can support us and our cause too! To protect the most vulnerable among us, the premature babies, who often have their lives ended too soon due to lack of proper medical care and treatment.
