Campaign Story
Hello, I'm Alex and I'm going to Calais on 5th September (and probably again later in the month) to bring sanitary towels and other items for the people there. I've bought my ticket and I have a six seater rust bucket to fill up, but I need funding to buy the sanitary towels wholesale. Ideally I would like to go more than once, since I am able, from a logistical perspective (hence the larger fundraising target).
My grandparents were refugees and, like many others, I can't stand to watch human beings just like us being treated in this way. The situation for women in Calais is beyond dreadful, because the tiny women's camp is full up and they have nowhere safe, or clean, to go. It's harder for women to move around or make it to their destination because they frequently have children in tow. If you would like to donate towards sanitary towels so that refugee women in Calais can have some hygiene and dignity, I would be very grateful. You can read this article for some info: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jul/31/women...
I'm only going for the day and I will probably deliver the items to Association Salam in Calais http://www.associationsalam.org/.
Also, if you have any of these items to donate (in north London), please contact me. All items need to be in good condition and suitable for terrible environment the people are living in:
Anti bacterial gel
First aid items (sterile bandages etc should be in date)
Essential toiletries
Playing cards, dominoes
Books in English, Urdu, Pashto, Farsi, Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic
Tents
Sleeping bags
Pens and paper
Unlocked mobile phones
Thanks, solidarity and love from Alex

Dictionaries!
Update posted by Alex Mankowitz at 10:25 pmHello kind people!Just an update. 5th September is approaching (too) fast. Just wanted to update you that you have given a good bundle of Pashto/French/Arabic/English dictionaries to the school for refugees. The school, L'Ecole Laque des Dunes, also functions as a much-needed safe space for women and children. Apparently they. . . . .
Women forced into prostitution in Calais
Update posted by Alex Mankowitz at 08:29 amHello friendsI've made contact with two women in Calais who are working to support the many women in Calais who have been forced into prostitution. They need donations to support the women's sexual health (condoms etc, also rape alarms). I'm making more contacts every day; it's very hard since there
More than sanitary towels....
Update posted by Alex Mankowitz at 05:29 pmHello everyone, I?m quite overwhelmed in every way by your generosity. If we only buy sanitary towels there will be a mountain! I?m in contact with some groups on the ground to see what else is needed. There are amazing people out there doing distribution and updating lists of urgently
More than once
Update posted by Alex Mankowitz at 08:46 amThanks to people's generosity within the first eight hours (!) it looks like I'll be able to go more than once, so I've extended the fundraising target. Thank you and much love to everyone who's contributed so far.Alex xxx
