Last night a fire devastated Moria refugee camp on Lesbos. Nearly 13,000 vulnerable migrants and refugees are currently without food, water and shelter just days after being collectively quarantined due to a Covid-19 outbreak.
The situation is tense. At the end of last week the camp was locked down after a migrant tested positive for Covid-19, with at least 35 others subsequently testing positive. As a result, organisations on the ground have been struggling to access the camp as roads have been blocked and humanitarian aid pushed back.
Médecins Sans Frontières have reported that now the camp has almost burnt to the ground. There is no more Moria. Hundreds of migrants have fled the camp towards nearby towns but have been blocked by police from entering due to fear of spreading the virus. A state of emergency has been declared across the island of Lesbos.
Our ConnectionHub students are amongst the many currently without supplies or shelter and are now at an increased risk from the spread of Covid-19. Whilst we cannot help organisations on the ground access the camp, by working with community leaders within the refugee population we can help the most vulnerable people find protective housing.
We are raising money to pay for protective housing for as many vulnerable people as possible, giving them shelter and a safe space to isolate from the Covid-19 spread. Our team is working hard on the ground to scout out protective shelters on Lesbos that can offer refuge from the mass exodus of the camp and the circulating virus.
Any donation, however small, will be used to find protective housing for vulnerable migrants and refugees to best protect them against the Covid-19 spread and offer shelter after the collapse of Moria camp. Please give what you can and spread awareness of this humanitarian crisis. Our funds will go directly to our team on the ground or directed to grassroots organisations with the capacity to help as many people as possible in this emergency.
