Hi everyone, thank you for your interest! Starting on September 15th I leave for an exciting two-month trip to Zambia, Africa. There, I will be dedicating my time to volunteer through the organization IVHQ (International Volunteer HQ). My particular project is listed under the focus of "Childcare" but more specifically I will be working with children between the ages of 2-7 under the project title "Kindergarten", providing extra assistance within pre-schools, nursery schools or day care centers.
"With a significant portion of children living under the poverty line in Zambia, many of these vulnerable children suffer from poor hygiene, inadequate education, insufficient food and little healthcare. Individualized attention and a focus on early development and education are crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty in Zambia."
Why am I doing this?
I'm 18 years old and consider myself very blessed. I was accepted into Boston College but have decided to defer my enrollment until 2020 and instead take a gap-year, and give back with volunteer work abroad: first stop being Zambia! I have always been committed to doing service around my local areas and even started a non-profit called Heart for Art in 2017. H4A is an enduring program designed to encourage and sustain a love for art in Chicago's most disadvantaged youth. I want to pursue these passions, but also experience something new. Something that would allow me to engage with new cultures and gain a better perspective on the important things in life. Most of all, I want to help create opportunities for those who otherwise have none. Our world needs change, and I think it simply starts with each of us sharing our gifts, talents and time with others. For me, there is no need to rush off to college and I realize that this is a rare opportunity to dive into something like this - completely. So, if not now, when?
- Teach basic English and Math to children from the local communities. Support in the classroom will assist the children in developing their confidence which will in turn support their future education.
- Mentoring, helping with homework, preparing meals, cleaning, helping with the general running of the home/center and interacting with the children through games, singing, dancing, sports, and arts and crafts.
- I was exposed to art at a very early age and have always loved to draw. I want to bring that artistic passion with me to Zambia! I will be collecting/raising money for art supplies to be used in the classroom. I am excited to share my love for art and hopefully spark a new interest in the children we meet.
How can you contribute?
Now for the ask... This is a completely volunteer experience and we are responsible for all costs. My expenses include airfare, accommodations, transportation, meals, legal requirements like Visa and medical shots, traveler's insurance, program fees, art supplies, and much more. The list is overwhelming... I am working hard this summer to cover some of the costs but also need to save for college in 2020. I appreciate your consideration and I thank you in advance for ANY donation of ANY amount - every little bit helps! Your donations will get me there but in reality, your money will create change and provide hope to those, and where it is most needed. ALL donations go 100% towards the costs to be covered in order to volunteer. Any leftover funds will go towards my volunteer efforts this spring in Central/South America. More to come on that!
-Please let me know if you are interested in staying up to date with my trip. I will be creating a website/blog about my trip with photos (Link soon to be attached).
