This historic high school is celebrating an astounding 150 years of excellence. The seminary was founded by American missionaries, the Lindleys, in 1869. It is the leading independent boarding school for black girls in Southern Africa. Situated 25km North West of Durban, Inanda Seminary is a registered Non-Profit Company and Public Benefit Organisation offering quality, value based education to 433 learners from Grades 8 to 12 at a very affordable fee-level. In 2018, for instance, this private school achieved a 100% pass rate in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Grade 12 examinations, with a 99% Bachelor Pass rate (university entrance) and 170 distinctions overall (see inanda.org).

To mark the extraordinary 150th-year milestone, the school has embarked on a campaign to raise R2 million to build a multi-purpose hall estimated at R3.8 million. The alumnae have donated R500 000 thus far. The hall will enable students to partake in indoor sports activities while also providing a facility for the extension work the institution undertakes in the surrounding poor Inanda community in which it now finds itself. Inanda Seminary participates in netball and basketball leagues in Durban and has matches against other schools in hockey, softball and volleyball. It would benefit the students greatly to be able to practise these and host tournaments in all weather. In addition, over the years the school has developed a host of extensive and highly impactful community outreach programmes. These include the Saturday, Summer, and Winter Schools in Maths, Science, Accounting and English for students from the disadvantaged surrounding schools, as well as professional development for their teachers and principals. The proposed hall will house all these activities in addition to Dramatic Arts performances, Benchmarking tests for the area, and computer skills training for the many beneficiaries. For the full proposal and architectural drawings, please see https://inanda.org/alumnae/multi-purpose-centre-proposal.html

All funds raised beyond the R3.8 million estimate will be used towards bursaries for indigent students. Fees are R16 000/quarter or $1 140/quarter (exchange rate: 1 USD = 14 ZAR)

Thank you in advance for your contribution to the legacy of this excellent historic boarding school for girls.

  • Supporting Inanda Seminary is about making history. This is a school that was established to provide well-groomed Christian wives to Ministers and has evolved to produce modern, sophisticated and independent young women.
