Campaign Story
Once dubbed by the Philippine Star newspaper as “one of the most enduring” concert bands in the country, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Marching and Concert Band stood proud for 84 years as an institution symbolizing Ateneo’s spirit of excellence and service. Under the guidance of Maestro Apolonio G. Enriquez, what started out as a simple marching and pep band was transformed into a multi-awarded and renowned concert band becoming a staple in Zamboanga City’s official events, winning competitions traditionally dominated by military and air force bands, and earning proud In one of the highlights of the band’s accomplishment and impact on the larger Ateneo community, it embarked on a widely acclaimed concert tour through Ateneo de Manila University, Ateneo de Davao University and Ateneo de Cagayan (Xavier University) that raised funds and benefitted student scholars and dormitory constructions across the different Ateneo campuses.
On July 7, 2016, a fire razed the ADZU Brebeuf Gym, where the ADZU Band’s office is located. The oldest structure standing in ADZU’s campus was completely destroyed along with 84 years of blood, toil and hard work of the men and women who have built the ADZU Band and turned it into a proud Ateneo legacy. The band’s brass instruments melted in the fire, its equipment and facilities lay in ruins and its once nationally acclaimed repertoire left in ashes. However, it’s proud tradition and the indomitable Atenean spirit that built it lives on.
Through raging winds of storms, eagles inevitably soar higher. Though the setbacks the fire caused have completely destroyed the band’s instruments and its priceless collection of musical pieces, out of its ashes its legacy will continue and a better band will rise. We call on you, the whole Ateneo community, men and women for others, music aficionados and Zamboanguenos across the world to help us in re-establishing not only a proud Ateneo institution but a one of a kind Zamboangueno tradition.
