Campaign Story
We would like to ask for your gracious support for our dear friends, Ali, Zahida, and son, Abbas. Their home flooded during Hurricane Harvey. They did not have flood insurance because they were in a no-flood zone and unfortunately, they were facing many challenges even before Harvey's arrival. (Please read more about the family below).
Your donation will go towards re-building their home and our goal is to raise $10,000 for the home repairs. The list is endless but includes:
- Sheet rock for first level
- Flooring for entire first level
- Mold Removal
- Doors and wood frames
- Paint
- Baseboards
- Kitchen cabinets
- Garage Door
- Refrigerator
- Dishwasher
- Microwave
- Bed mattresses
- Furniture that was destroyed including entire living and dining areas
2017 began with the loss of Zahida's father-in-law. He tragically passed away after struggling with medical complications for over a year. He was known for his positive outlook, and his loss was felt by everyone who was lucky enough to know him.
Just when the family began to have a sense of normality, Zahida was laid off in May due to the oil and gas downturn. Overnight her family lost income and health benefits. Determined to find new work, she immediately hit the ground running reaching out to everyone she knew for an opportunity. Employer after employer explained that the timing was not great and perhaps in the fall there would be something for her. The family cut expenses where they could and Zahida continued looking for work while caring for her son, Abbas, over the summer.
In June, they lost their car on the road during a heavy rainfall. Still, they remained positive, thankful that her father-in-law left a vehicle which would be sufficient until both were working full time again. In July, her mother in law, who had been struggling with her own health issues following her husband's passing was hospitalized, ultimately having a pacemaker put in. August finally came around and it was time for Abbas to get back to school and the family hoped and prayed that a good opportunity would come around for Zahida now that summer had ended.
Then Hurricane Harvey hit. Two feet of water entered the home where Zahida, her husband, Ali, and nine-year-old son, Abbas have lived since Abbas was born. Everything they worked for was literally under water. Aside from that, the last thing Ali’s father ever owned, and the family’s sole source of transportation, was now gone. Their house, like so many others, was in a no flood zone and thus has no flood insurance. They are left to rebuild their life and have no steady income. Their son thinks he will never get to go home.
This is an extremely giving family. Even though their home has been impacted by Hurricane Harvey, they have assisted members of their community where they can. Ali has helped others in the neighborhood cut out their flooded walls and flooring. Zahida has volunteered at her local mosque and Abbas’ school to help flood victims. She is also using her knowledge of immigration law to help those who may be impacted by the recently announced DACA changes. She realizes that the only way any of us will get through this is if we are all in it together. Please, if you are able, help this family get back on their feet.
Thank You.
