here is the history of the village:

Khalde, the village known for its heroic fall in the battle in Georgia’s region of Svaneti. In the 19th century, the Russian Empire’s rulers decided to introduce the new tax on land. The discontent of the residents of Svaneti turned into unrest and then uprising. In June 1875, up to 2,000 armed residents of Free Svaneti with the Svan customs and traditions took an oath on the Shaliani icon that the Svans would fight to the last drop of blood if the Russian Empire did not retreat. 13 instigators of the unrest, who came to the talks to the governor of Kutaisi, were arrested and three were declared wanted. During that year the detainees died in prison. As the two of the wanted were natives of Khalda, military units and militia were deployed at the village and they demanded the extradition of Gurmach Gasviani and Chargaz Jokhadze. The senior men of the village, Gegi and Givard Gasviani, who had come to the negotiations, were pierced with bayonets, which resulted in the opening of fire from the Gasviani Tower. The head of Tsageri district, Grinevsky, the head of the region of Becho and other officers were captured and executed under the Svan law. 19 families lived in Khalda, 19 out of the 35 strong men were from the Gasvianis, 7 from Choplianis, 6 Jokhadzes and 3 Chegianis. The Khaldeans till the last breath were faithful to the oath given by them on the Shaliani Icon. By the order of the Russian Emperor Alexander II, a military expedition of 2,500 men, commanded by General Tsitovich, was sent to Svaneti. On the south side of Khalde 20 cannons were deployed. The Khaldeans were fortified in the eleven towers. The military expedition was only able to approach them on August 25, 1876. The village fell under triple siege. On the 26th, in the morning, the village was engulfed in blaze. In the uneven battle, the Khaldeans did the great damage to the enemy, but they ran out of ammunition. General Tsitovich sent a report to Emperor Alexander the Second: “The village of Khalde was taken and destroyed completely. Some of the rebels were arrested and some took refuge in the mountains. Rebellion's nest is liquidated”. By decree of the Russian emperor Alexander the Second, the village’s name was changed and it was forbidden to live there. Nowadays, the descendants of the hero ancestors, are trying to give the original appearance to the ruins and revive the village of Khalde.
