Campaign Story
Precious returned home to reunite with her 3 children in 2020, after going through S&D’s Aftercare Training Program. During her time with us, she gained a Nail Technician Diploma, planned and fundraised to start up a nail salon business back at home. She then opened up her salon in 2021 in Uganda.
Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted business as many in the area endured sustained loss of income. Precious has persevered through the past few years, even opening her salon to allow a local barber to operate during times outside of lockdowns, to help keep the business afloat. However, patronage remains low and she is thinking creatively to see other income generating opportunities with her shop space.
Juice, coffee, tea and snacks
In our recent conversations with Precious, she noted that while townspeople are still recovering from the economic impact of the pandemic, the popularity of snacks and beverages is high. She has observed a market opportunity to sell these at her shop, and needs a USD200 loan to get this up and running. She believes that after 3 months of selling these additional items in her shop, she will be able to repay the loan over the following 3 months.
Pay-It-Forward plan
Although presented to Precious as a loan, S&D intends to redirect the repayments to support Exodus’ school, which is currently providing primary education to over 100 children in the nearby Gayaza area.
