I found myself last year almost wheelchair bound, 44 yrs old I weighed 375 lbs. I started as a Nurse working for the VA hospital where I was injured as the result of lifting a patient that had fallen on the floor, I lost 2 inches in height instantly, as a result of compressing 2 of my disks in my back. I continued to work for a couple years hurting all the time until I could no longer work. I have been disabled for several years, but I have decided I don't want to lose anymore of my life and be in a wheelchair. When I was injured I got a viral arthritis and lost the cartilege in both knee's I was about 32 yrs. old when injured. I have lived for quite a few years with bone on bone knees. I tried to talk to my Orthopedic surgeon to see if I could get my knees fixed after several years of saying "your to young" He finally agreed to replace them because the pain was so bad, but told me I had to loose weight 1st. So I found another surgeon and after several months of dieting and trying to ride my stationary recumbent bike "I could only do for 10 minutes at a time" I had my stomach stapled and went from 375 to 248 the Dr agreed finally to give me knee replacements, I had both knees replaced six weeks apart. 1st one in April 2017, and the 2nd in May of 2017. Now I have just finished physical therapy and saw my gastric dr. who sent me to look into getting my large amount of excess skin (that causes break down of my skin where it rubs and also causes further back pain from the pulling of the weight forward.) removed. I am now down to 235, I have lost 140 pounds. With all my copays and cost of insurance I still owe $1,500.00 for the first surgery and I had to pay over $2000.00 for other copays and physical therapy. I live on Disability pay from Social security. My husband has a bookstore that he runs, but it is still struggling. Now I have been approved to remove the excess skin but my portion is another $5505.00 I don't have this money but am going to try to go forward with this and trust that God and good hearted people will be able to help me. I still volunteer as a RN Nurse to keep my license current so some day soon hopefully I will be able to go back to work again. Thank you for reading.
