My name is Yolanda Betana, I am 18 years old. I was born in an informal settlement called Imizamo Yethu, in Hout Bay. I am the last born in a family of 4 children and I'm currently doing my first year at the college of Cape Town, majoring in Cosmetology.
I have always been inlove with Cosmetology and I have been doing very well at school. This is something I started before going to varsity. When I was in grade in 11, I had already started practicing my skills around my community.
Growing up in a small community I have come to realize the importance of school and know that not being certified in what I love doing can be a problem for me in the future. I would like to graduate and work professionally in my industry and hopefully be able to provide for me and family.
Last year we had a tragedy in my family where we lost my brother and father, this coursed a big problem in our finances as my mother is now left alone to support us after having to bury both my father and Brother by herself.
Since then have been working part time around my community doing people’s make up for events such as Matric balls and birthdays but the money I have been making has only been enough for transportation.
My mother has been working very hard and even had to take up extra hours to help pay for my fees but her income alone is still not enough for my fees. This means that if I can't find the money somewhere else, I will have to drop out of school. Please I’m only left with a few months in this second semester before this year ends, I really need help.
I am currently applying at different make up companies for funds for my second year and I am very positive that I will get something for next year, as I believe that my portfolio is quite good for a first year student.
I pray that this works out.
