Peruvian Promise – Machu Picchu Trek

Global Volunteer Network (GVN) is a non-Government organization that places volunteers in a wide range of opportunities such as teaching or environmental work in a number of countries. The project I will be participating in is the Machu Picchu Trek that is partnered with the Peruvian Hearts Program. This progressive nonprofit organization has raised over $1.8 million to help women and children in need. It is designed to develop the potential for leadership in young girls living in rural Peru through increased educational opportunites, the development of their sense of personal empowerment, and their ability to set and carry out short and long-term goals through the development and execution of service projects. I will be working with this organization in Peru, South America for 9 days starting August 3, 2013. During my time there, I will be hiking a strenuous 26 miles on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu as well as spending quality time on different service projects within the Orphanage, hoping to impact these children with knowledge, support, mental and physical care, and respect.

The goal of volunteering in Peru is to offer underprivileged children a future. The hope is to provide these young girls with the basic necessities of life - love, food, clothing and shelter - and also provide them with an education so they can advance towards the same opportunities as their peers around the world. During my placement I will be caring for orphans, street children, and abused children at a few different orphanages. I will take on the role of a sibling to the children, a relationship that these children may be without and that is often taken for granted.

In order to prevail in this opportunity, I will not only be volunteering my time, but I will be providing funds to support the Peruvian Promise Program. Program and application fees to volunteer for this program accumulate to $3,000.00. The majority of this amount will go directly to the Peruvian Promise Program, while the remaining goes to accomodations, transportation, entry Visa, vaccinations, and insurance. As you can see, volunteering does come at a cost.

I am working hard to raise the funds needed to meet these children and hopefully impact their lives in a positve way, which I am positive that they will provide me with an equally rewarding experience in return.
