THE STORY

Paperplanes, Don’t Always Soar is a short film based on the director’s true experience.

A daughter tries to bridge the bond she lost after her father returns home from a plane crash, where he struggles to remember his life before that fateful catastrophe.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

by Diyana Amir

“Paperplanes, Don’t Always Soar” is a film born out of a chilling incident that my family and I had to go through about ten years ago. This film is an anecdote from the time my very own father survived a near-death airplane crash, and the post-traumatic effects that follow after it.

The film follows the main character who is inspired by myself, Dana, a young and gullible ten year old who tries to bridge the bond she lost after her father, Andri, returns home from a plane crash. She carries the weight of his trauma on her shoulders, as her own father struggles to remember his life before the incident. This includes Dana and the strong father-daughter bond that they once shared. After the incident, their lives as a family were filled with detachment, agony, challenges and pain. Through Dana’s eyes, this story highlights the dissociation and distress the family had to live through, but in the end with support and a bond so strong, can unexpectedly bring back consciousness and life.

So much admiration in my life with the films I enjoy, is thanks to so much pain and trauma in someone else’s experience. I would like to give back to that, and be able to tell everyone a compelling story that is very close to my heart.

My hopes for “Paperplanes, Don’t Always Soar” is that it should be something straight to the point, real, concise and that people can take away something from it no matter the kind of life they have lived.

I was a child when this incident happened to me, only experiencing without having a proper voice. I hope that this is my breakthrough to finally express myself about how I felt in ways I couldn’t at that time.

Anything that is human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be manageable. When we talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting and less scary. After four long years of contemplation and as an introvert myself, I am finally ready to share my voice through film – a story about how I overcame what I went through and hopefully, be somebody else’s guide.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We are a team of young film students who fell in love with a story and want to tell it the way it deserves to be told.

Having to make a film as students, especially in the post - pandemic world, it has definitely put a strain on our finances but we are determined to bring it to life nevertheless. Your donations, big or small, would help in various areas in production as listed below:

1. Talent Fees

2. Equipment and Location Rental Fees

3. Meals for Crew & Cast

4. Transportation Costs for Production

With your kind donations, you’ll be a part of fulfilling the dream of a handful of passionate student filmmakers to create something remarkable. You will make our film a reality, while supporting an incredible story our director Diyana has to offer to the world. The final goal is to enter film festivals and show the world our way of telling compelling stories.

Any amount contributed would be much appreciated and greatly help in terms of our financial budget. However, it would mean just as much if you can help us share this campaign link amongst your friends, family and on social media.

For more information about the film, donation matters as well as any possible collaboration, do feel free to reach us at [email protected] or ig: @paperplanes_film and we will be happy to answer your queries.
