Cutting a long story short… My Aunty suffers from blood clots and she had an IVC filter fitted just over 3 years ago for surgery. After server complications and agonising pain she was given a CT and MRI scan which confirmed the IVC filter had blocked with clots and that the filter was permanent and could not be removed. After being told by the consultant she would lose her legs or not walk again, she spent 2 months in hospital forcing her self to walk again. Slowly through pure determination she began to walk again. The vena cava, which is the main vein carrying blood and oxygen to the heart and lungs, is now destroyed and will not work again. She has grown collateral veins but cannot walk properly and only for short periods due to pain swelling and breathlessness. She was recently admitted to hospital again where another CT scan confirmed that the legs from the IVC filter have pierced the vena cava and one leg is lodged in her vertebrae and another leg is close to the aorta the main artery in the body. She has been told nothing can be done to help her and after long searches she has been communicating with a specialised IVC filter consultant in America at Sanford hospital. The filter mutating is the worst thing that could happen and without this operation her life is at risk, every day being more crucial to have this operation. If a leg from the filter breaks off and travels to her heart or lung then this could be fatal as well as if the leg pierces the aorta it is fatal both of which could happen any time since the filter has perforated the vena cava. She is in constant pain and her life is in great danger. She has suffered so much and as her niece i want to help her get to America for the operation to save her life.
