Omulu Guanabara Capoeira BATIZADO 2013 – Western Mass

Our Story

Omulu Guanabara is dedicated to teaching and sharing the art of capoeira.  Capoeira is an
Afro-Brazilian martial art that blends elements of dance, music, self-defense, and acrobatics.  The core elements of the game were brought to Brazil by African slaves.  Capoeira is an expression of resistance and cultural survival, handed down to us through generations.  We are extremely proud to participate in and share this rich art form, and we need your help to continue.

Our Event

Batizado (bah-chi-zah-do) translates to 'baptism' and is the primary annual event for a capoeira group.  It is a celebration and rite of passage in which beginning students officially enter the culture of capoeira.  A Batizado is also usually paired with graduation ceremonies in which accomplished students are promoted to higher ranks. Our group's world renowned Mestres (masters) will come to the Pioneer Valley to give a series of workshops and to preside over the ritual.  The level of instruction cannot be had locally and is a fantastic opportunity.  Please help us make it happen!

We have already raised half of the money we need to host our three-day event.  Your support will help create a beautiful cultural event October 24-26, 2013 and continue the legacy of Capoeira.

Our Challenges

One of the largest challenges is that it is up to the students to raise enough money to host the event. To plan and host a Batizado is a huge undertaking. It requires us to:

• Plan a 3-day event with workshops.
• Find a location to host the event.
• Organize materials (t-shirts, program guide, etc).
• Book a Flight, find lodging, and feed our visiting Mestres.
• Do various fund raising projects to fuel the project.

We are over halfway there, but have not reached our goal yet! If we raise $1,500 we'll have enough to cover the existing expenses and host this event!
