Nyla’s Road to the 2017 World Wrestling Championships

Update posted by Shawn Burgess On Aug 14, 2017

Nyla returned home from the Canada Summer Games with two bronze medals earning them in the team and individual portion of the competition.

As a result of losses to New Brunswick & British Columbia in the Team Dual portion, Nyla went on to initially wrestle for 5th place match the Individual tournament. During the medal matches of the individual tournament, we learned that Nyla would be upgraded to a bronze as a result of a rare double injury default.

Although Nyla could have simply accepted the upgraded result, she chose to vacate the result from her fifth place match and re-wrestler her opponent from Manitoba for the bronze medal and would accept whatever the outcome was.

Knowing that she had another shot at the podium, Nyla quickly took control from the whistle and was able to claim the bronze medal by pinning her opponent. Although this was not the result that she wanted, it was a great experience that she will continue to build upon.

We are extremely proud of her and her journey as this was an once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in the games.

Thank you to everyone for all your continued support!

Nyla wrestled her way to a bronze medal at the 2017 Cadet Pan American Championships.

Nyla competed in the 65kg weight class with a total of 5 other girls. Based on the number of girls entered, Nyla’s would begin the tournament in the quarter finals against Thamires Martins Machado of Brazil. Nyla won the match by a score of 7-4 advancing her to the semifinals.

Nyla’s semifinal match was vs. Vicky Estefania Cevillano Porozo of Ecuador. Although Nyla was trying to put together her offensive attack, it was not enough as Vicky was able to outscore Nyla 6-0. With the lost, it placed Nyla in the first bronze medal match where she would face Ximena Magali Bogado of Argentina.

During the bronze medal match, Ximena took a 3-0 lead heading into the end of the first period. With about 45 seconds left in the match, Nyla was able to take Ximena out of bounds on her back to score 4 important points. When the finale whistle blew, Nyla had won the match by a score of 6-3.

The competition was tough and although Nyla had hopes of being the Pan American Champion, she was able to earn a bronze medal as well as the invaluable experience gained in her first international tournament.

Nyla will be heading to Cleveland, Ohio with the under 19 women’s team for an international training camp from June 29 to July 4, 2017 as part of team Canada’s final preparation for the Cadet Pan-American Championship.

The cost associated with Nyla attending this camp will be roughly $400USD.

This is a great opportunity as it will not only feature a number of the US’ senior coaching staff but, it will also featured a number of their top under 19 wrestlers. In addition, two of Wrestling Canada’s former Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek & Carol Huynh will also be there to help the girls get ready both physically and mentally.

Nyla and the rest of the Cadet Women's team will leave from Cleveland on July 4 and will fly directly to Argentina on July 5th. She will have a few days to acclimatize to Argentina before competition begins on July 8th. Once Nyla returns to Canada on July 10, there will be no down time as she will be headed to another training camp as part of her preparation for the Canada Summer Games.

All though it will be a busy couple of weeks, Nyla is really looking forward to representing her country, community but most of all each of you.. #TeamBurgess

In addition to representing Canada at the international level, Nyla has also qualified to represent Team Ontario at the Canada Games that will be taking place in Winnipeg, Alberta from July 28 to August 13. The wrestling portion of the games will take place from August 6 to August 11.

The Canada Games are where greatness begins for many of our Canadian athletes who are the best in their sport. Like the Olympic Games, this is a multi-sport competition that take place every two years alternating between summer and winter. The Games are Canada’s largest multi-sport event and represent the pinnacle of interprovincial/territorial sport competition.

Nyla is one of the youngest members of Team Ontario Wrestling as she will be competing against other girls as old as 18. Nyla will have only just turned 15 one month prior to the start of the games.

Making the team was one of the five wrestling goals that Nyla set for herself this year and she is really excited to be apart of Team Ontario.

Stay tuned for more information on this amazing opportunity and experience.
