Campaign Story
WHO I AM I am a teacher in Knoxville, Tennessee. I teach Advanced Placement American Government and Politics in a suburban high school. I have been a teacher for 23 years. I am a good teacher but I believe I can be a better teacher. One of the means by which I can be a better teacher is through attendance at good quality professional meetings. I want to participate in the National Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference which wil be held in Boston, Massachusetts. This conference of eight thousand plus educators will present speakers, trainings, and dynamic methods through which I can enhance my performance and therefore my students' performance on my county, state and national performance standards.
WHAT WILL THE FUNDS BE USED FOR? My state has adopted common core standards and I am adapting my lessons and teaching practices to reflect those changes. However, I believe there is far more to learn than what has been taught at my county in-services. This is where attending the National Council for the Social Studies annual conference in Boston, Massachusetts would assist me in my never ending pursuit of great teaching and learning. According to their prospectus, many of their sessions will cover the very topics I need. However, there is a major problem standing in the way of my attendance at NCSS. The county where I teach pays for administrators to participate in conferences, professional development, or trainings but teachers are relegated to local in-service instruction. There are no monies for this kind of travel in the Knox County Schools budget.
HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE USED?
CONFERENCE REGISTRATION $260
HOTEL (SHARED) 488
PLANE FARE 381
TOTAL $1,129
WHAT WILL I DO WHEN I RETURN? There will be sessions, note-worthy events and speakers who will bring knowledge, strategies and approaches at the conference I am sure that will assist me in my classroom delivery. I will use those practices in my classroom. My students will benefit from what I have learned and seen at the conference. Also, I intend to share with other educators in my county. Once returned, I intend to seek occasions where I can delineate the insight, lessons and knowledge gained from my participation at the conference.
HOW WILL YOU, AS A DONOR, KNOW WHAT I LEARNED? Years ago when I became a teacher, it was because I was nosy. I wanted to know as much as I could about as much as there was. I still feel that way. You may learn more than you want to know about how a social studies classroom works. I will blog on my Facebook page while at the conference and after the conference I will post special lessons, strategies and activities that made the trip the most important to me as an educator. I expect to learn a lot! It is my expectation that my students will learn a lot, too!
