Medical Mission to Peru

Dear Friends and Family,

My name is Adrienne.  I am a first year medical student at University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey, School of Osteopathic Medicine. I am planning to volunteer in Peru this summer. I am very interested in global medicine and I am hoping to continue volunteering for the underserved both in the USA and abroad throughout my medical career.

Through volunteering in South America, I will help the community, learn invaluable clinical and communicational skills, and gather more knowledge about global health. My interest in global medicine and pediatrics has driven me to use my summer as a way to help communities around the world and learn new skills that will make me a better doctor in the future.

My medical mission will start in a local underserved clinic in Cuzco. I will use the skills I have learned in the first year of medical school, as well as those I learned through volunteering with the homeless community at The Suitcase Clinic in Berkeley, CA and with the underserved at Camden Clinic in New Jersey. At the clinic I will practice my Spanish and gain communication skills that will help me become a better and more attentive doctor. I will learn clinical skills while assisting local physicians and training with other medical students.

In addition I will be working with disabled children. I will be changing diapers, feeding, playing, and providing physical therapy for the children. I will use skills I learned while volunteering in Calcutta, India at the Mother Teresa House as well as Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine taught to me in the first year of medical school. Here I will gain knowledge and skills that will be beneficial for pursuing a career in pediatrics and family medicine.

I will document my trip on my blog, adrienneschlatter.blogspot.com, which I used while I was in India, to promote the field of global health and bring firsthand accounts of health discrepancies around the world.

I am hoping to fund my trip through school assistance and family and friend donations. Any amount is appreciated.
