Have you ever made a mistake or done something you wish you could take back? Imagine if you had to pay for that mistake everyday for the next 20 years. That is the reality that Matt is currently living. Matt is a kindhearted, family oriented guy that made some mistakes that took his life down the wrong path and he is now paying for it with a 20 year sentence for manufacturing a controlled substance, despite the fact that he was a first time offender. Matt is not a career criminal or gangster, though he is currently being held in St Clair Correctional Facility, one of the deadliest maximum security prisons there is. Within the walls of the prison he is a minority. Because of this factor, combined with poor staffing ratios, he has been stabbed several times by other inmates and forced to defend himself. The Department of Corrections itself is corrupt. During his years in prison he has suffered inhumane conditions including but not limited to denial of proper medical attention, withholding of light and water within his cell, insect and rodent infested facilities, as well as having his cell flooded with urine and feces from other inmates. Other inmates have started fires within their cells forcing him to inhale smoke followed by pepper spray when officers try to regain control of the prison. On several occasions he has been brutally beaten by corrections officers while handcuffed behind his back. Most recently he has spent months in restrictive custody without privileges for trying to disarm an inmate that stabbed him, despite the fact that he was only given 21 days for fighting without a weapon. Filed grievances and protests from family have fallen on deaf ears. After receiving several disciplinary actions against him for defending himself from the hostile prison conditions, Matt was passed over for parole a couple of years ago. With little faith in the judicial system, and his next parole hearing in December of this year, we are asking that people donate so we can secure Matt a lawyer to help navigate him through the parole process and bring him home. All proceeds will go directly towards his legal expenses. Matt is an intelligent, business-minded individual with a lot of potential. He has used his years in prison to reflect on his mistakes and is striving everyday to become a better person. He realizes that it was his poor decisions that have landed him in prison, but in his case the punishment certainly did not fit the crime. He does not deserve to waste away in prison with murders and rapists for his mistakes. With the help of generous donations from people like you, he hopes to be able to return to his family who is waiting to help guide him, so he can become a productive and successful member of society.
