Lifesaving Treatment for Odette

Odette is a mom of 4 who fled Burundi with her family in 2014.

Afrika Awake has been assisting this family since 2015 when they were displaced during the xenophobic attacks that occurred.

In 2022 Odette started having a problem with her eye. Miraculously and with our financial support she was able to have a tumor removed from behind her eye at St John's eye clinic in Soweto.

Unfortunately just a few months later she began to have many other health issues. Her legs were in so much pain she was unable to walk.

By the time she saw our own private GP she had not urinated for 6 full days and a catheter was immediately inserted and we were advised to go and do an immediate ultrasound.

The ultrasound revealed massive masses in her rectum and other parts of her body and we were told she needs to be admitted to hospital immediately.

Getting her into the Charlotte Maxeke was not easy, but she was admitted, spent over 3 months in hospital and recieved life saving surgery to remove the massive tumors from her rectum.

She however needs chemotherapy if she has any hope of beating the cancer that is ravaging her body.

She received the first dose with no problem while still admitted.

On return for her second dose she was unfortunately sent away without having received her chemotherapy, despite the fact that for her it is lifesaving treatment and therefore unconstitutional for our hospital to turn her away without payment.

Because she is not a South African citizen the hospital want a R20 000 deposit upfront and R1800 for each session on the day.

The total cost will be closer to R100k.

We have yet to encounter a braver, stronger Lady who has come so far and suffered so much. We cannot turn our back on her now.

She has 4 beautiful children to care for.

Please help us to pay for the treatment Odette so urgently needs.

Her life depends on it.
