We are a group of development communication students working to help Chorkor, a fishing coastal community manage its plastic waste on its beaches and open drains through behavioral change and a series of clean up campaigns in Accra, Ghana. Chorkor beach is burdened by filth and plastic waste generated by the community and by other communities which are carried into the sea through an adjoining lagoon when it rains. Also residents are at higher risk of asthma, lung diseases and cardiovascular diseases due to the stench and smoke that is generated because some of them burn their plastic waste instead of collecting them for recycle.
This campaign is called “Clean up Reason up” this will help the community to manage and clean up plastic waste at the sea for recycling. It’s a collaborative approach with the governing council of the community, the Pentecost Church in the community and other equal important stakeholders. This exercise is to:
Reduce the amount of existing sea pollution
Prevent worsening conditions in the over burdened beaches
Clean up the beach 1st Saturday of every month
Provide waste bins at the beaches for residents to drop in waste
Have a monthly focus group meetings with the community to sensitize them on the need to stop littering the beach
Create awareness on environment sanitation.
